The Wolf and the Buffalo
by Elmer Kelton
Afterword by Lawrence Clayton
When white settlers swept across the frontier, the wolf and the buffalo were caught up by a force they could neither understand nor control. So, too, two men were caught—Gray Horse, a Comanche warrior whose medicine came from the wolf, and Gideon Ledbetter, one of the Tenth Calvary’s black or “buffalo” soldiers. With rising tension the novel focused first on Gray Horse, then Gideon, they move toward an inevitable confrontation in the hot, dusty plains of Texas.
Kelton’s grasp of history is firm, and he deals impartially with the forces that swept away Indian culture and brought so-called civilization to West Texas. More than a story of violence and prejudice, this is a novel of courage and dignity.

ELMER KELTON is the author of over forty novels. Several have won Spur Awards
from Western Writers of America and Western Heritage (Wrangler) Awards from the
National Cowboy Hall of Fame. He has been honored by the Texas Institute of
Letters, WWA, and the Western Literature Association for lifetime achievement.
