Karla
K. Morton, has just won the Betsy Colquitt award for
her poem “Charmer” that recently appeared in TCU’s
literary magazine descant. Morton’s book, Karla
K. Morton: New and Selected Poems, will be published
by TCU Press in the fall of 2010 as part of the TCU Texas Poets
Laureate Series. Congratulations, Karla!
Marcia
Hatfield Daudistel, editor of Literary El
Paso (TCU Press, October 2009) has just been named
West Texas/Trans Pecos editor of Texas Books in Review.
Daudistel will cover the Texas literary scene from Wichita Falls
to El Paso and describes the new position as “a labor of
love.” Congratulations, Marcia.
Gov. Rick Perry
has named Light Townsend Cummins Texas State
Historian for the next two years. Cummins, author of Emily
Austin of Texas 1795-1851, Number 1 in TCU
Press' Texas Biography Series, is a history professor
and director of the Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies
at Austin College in Sherman. He is a board member of the Texas
State Historical Association and an associate of the Danforth
Foundation. He is also past chair of the Grayson County Historical
Commission and a member of Humanities Texas.
Dr.
Jack L. August, author of Dividing Western
Waters: Mark Wilmer and Arizona v California; Vision
in the Desert: Carl Hayden and Hydropolitics in the American Southwest,
and the forthcoming Adversity is My Angel: The Life
and Career of Raul H. Castro, has received the Golden
Bear Award from Phoenix College for his contributions to the success
of Phoenix College students as an Advisory Council Partner.
Noted book
designer Barbara Whitehead of Austin has won
the 2009 Fred Whitehead Award for the Best Design of a Trade Book
from the Texas Institute of Letters. The award, named in honor
of Barbara’s late husband, is for the TCU Press title, Traces
of Forgotten Places, by Don Collins.

"Glow" has been accepted for publication in Texas Poetry
Calendar 2010. ("Dreamsicles" was published in Texas
Poetry Calendar 2009.) "Prism" was published in the
di-verse-city 2009 Anthology of the Austin International Poetry
Festival. ("Chapultepec Park" won the 2008 poetry contest
and was published in last year's anthology.) "Solitaire"
was published in the 2008-2009 Swirl Literary Arts Journal of
Lone Star College-Montgomery. Highlights Foundation has awarded
DeDe Ducharme a tuition scholarship to the 2009 Writers Workshop
at Chautauqua, New York. She will be working with other writing
professionals to improve a novel manuscript for middle grade readers.
